Caulophyllum thalictroides | blue cohosh

This plant is not currently available, however, propagation is planned/underway. Please sign up for the waitlist below to receive updates on availability.

An eastern and central US native shade plant that is easy to overlook until the bight blue seed pods appear in late summer. They cling to the plant in fall even as foliage declines, lending interest to the garden.

Easy to grow in the woodland garden with rich, moist but well-drained soil.

Note: these plants take a long time to bloom. We do not expect to see flowers for another two to three years. The first image shows spring blooms and newly emerging foliage. The second shows summer foliage and the remains of the blooms. The third shows the berries.

Zones: 3 to 8
Family: Asteraceae
Type: Perennial
Height: 12 to 36 in.
Spread: 6 to 12 in.
Exposure: part sun to full shade
Soil: moist, well-drained soil
Bloom Time: April
Native Range: eastern and central North America
